Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn - Past Progressive ​

1. Định nghĩa
​

- Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được dùng để diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm chính xác trong quá khứ.

Example : Jack was working on the report last night at 10.15.

- Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn thường được dùng để diễn tả 1 hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ thì có hành động khác xen vào.

Example : Janet was talking on the phone when I arrived.

2. Cách dùng

- Hành động diễn ra tại thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ

Example : I was watching TV at 9 o'clock last night.

They were working on the report at six.

- Hành động xảy ra trong 1 khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ

Example : We were studying during the recess.

Peter was sleeping during class.

- Hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào

Example : She was speaking on the phone when he arrived.

When he won the game, I was cooking.

- Hành động đang xảy ra trong khi có hành động khác cũng đang diễn ra
Example : She was working on her homework while I was preparing dinner.

They were finishing the project while we were putting together the proposal.

3. Các từ thường đi kèm

at six, nine o'clock, etc. during, while, when

Cấu trúc

* Khẳng định

Chủ ngữ + be + verb + -ing.

+ I was, You were, He was, She was, We were, You were, They were -> watching TV when I arrived.
* Phủ định

Chủ ngữ + be + not + verb + -ing.

+ I wasn't, You weren't, He wasn't, She wasn't, We wasn't, You wasn't, They wasn't -> working when he came into the room.

* Nghi vấn

Từ để hỏi + be + chủ ngữ + verb + -ing?

+What -> were you, they -> doing at seven o'clock?
+What -> was I, he, she -> doing at seven o'clock?
