Planning the bedrooms
The planning process for bedrooms is like that for other areas. Develop a list showing its uses. It will provide a sleeping area. In addition, it may serve as a place to sew, read, write, or relax to music
Location
The bedrooms are usually located together in a wing on one end of a house. A second-floor location provides privacy and quiet. Rooms for other quiet activities are located with them. This could include a nursery or study.
noise control
As bedrooms are planned, the control of noise from within the house and outside should be considered. Placing closets on inside walls is effective. Walls can be insulated. Even better control is achieved if studs are staggered when the house is build. Locate bedrooms away from the street to avoid street noises. If this is not possible, consider a high, solid fence or heavy shrubbery, in front of the bedroom area. Other noise reduction devices include carpeting, draperies, acoustical ceiling tile, and storm windows. Solid core doors stop noise from the hall.
The size selection for the bedroom is most influenced by two major factors: the size of the furniture and to minimum spacing between furniture. Typical templates and furniture sizes are shown in Fig 2-58. The sizes of bedroom suites vary considerably. Certain styles, such as Mediterranean, are large and massive and require a large room. Contemporary furniture is lighter, more delicate, and requires less space. Accurate planning requires some knowledge of the type of furniture to be used.
The minimum spacing between furniture is shown in Fig 2-60, 2-61 and 2-62. Remember that these are minimum sizes. Notice that a single twin bed and night table require 4'-9'' (1448 mm) wall space. Twin beds with a night table need 8'-2'' (2489 mm) wall space. A regular double bed with night table requires 6'-0'' (1829 mm) and king size - 7'10'' (2388 mm).
A single occupancy bedroom requires a minimum of about 100 square feet (10.2m2). A queen size bed requires 120 square feet (11.1 m2) and a king size bed needs 135 square feet (12.6m2). A room with twin beds requires at least 140 square feet (13m2).
Traffic aisles between furniture are to be near a door, enough space should be left clear for the door to open. Arrangements are easier to plan for a rectangular-shaped room than for a room that is square.
Storage
The furniture and closets in a bedroom are most often used to store clothing accessories. In a room designed for one person, a minimum of 3 lineal feed (914 mm) of closet space is needed. A double occupancy room should have 6 lineal feet (1829 mm). These are minimums and more should be provided if possible. Closet design sizes are given in the storage section in this chapter.
As the room is planned, the closets should be considered as the furniture is arranged. Closets consume long sections of wall space. Some designers make closet templates and move them around on the plan as if they were a piece of furniture.
Other planning considerations
1. Allow for two windows in every bedroom. Try to place them so the room has cross ventilation. Do not have drafts blowing across the bed. See Fig 2-63.
2. Location bedrooms so they are entered from a hall.
3. Consider using high windows with a sill about 5'-0'' (1524 mm) from the floor. This increases privacy and allows easier arrangement of furniture. It may, however, prevent easy escape in case of fire.
4. Consider using sliding glass doors to a private patio. This opens up the room to the outside and makes a small room seem larger.
5. Coordinate the placement of bathrooms with bedrooms. Consider a private bath as pan of the master bedroom.
6. Locate mirrors and the dressing table to take advantage of the natural light.
7. In a more expensive house, design a private dressing room and walk-in closet off the master bedroom. See Fig. 2-66.
8. Locate beds so they have space on three sides for easy movement about the room.
9. Choose floor and wall coverings carefully. For example, those used in a child's room should be durable.
