The Midwest states of the US are facing their coldest temperatures in almost 20 years, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures reached 20 to 50 degrees below average in parts of Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska.In Minnesota, the public schools have been closed. This is the first time extreme weather has forced pupils to stay away from school during the past 17 years in this area. The cold will sweep through other parts of New England where residents are digging out from a snowstorm. In Chicago, the temperature is expected to get down to below minus 24 degrees Celsius. Over the past week, at least 15 people have died of weather-related causes in the country.
