Grammar:      Động từ V-ing và động từ có To  A.      Động từ V-ing:  Là động từ được thêm hậu tố -ing vào, ví dụ, play -> Playing, watch -> watching, và có chức năng của một danh từ, nghĩa là có thể làm chủ ngữ, túc từ, bổ ngữ và từ đồng vị (apposition)      1.       Động từ thêm –ing làm chủ ngữ: Danh động từ làm chủ ngữ trong câu, diễn tả ý tổng quát.  Ví dụ: Swimming is a good exercise. (Bơi là một cách tập thể dục rất tốt)Learning languages requires patience. (Học ngoại ngữ đòi hỏi phải kiên trì)  2.       Động từ thêm –ing làm bổ ngữ (complement)  Ví dụ: Her hobby is painting.  My interest is watching football.  3.       Động từ thêm –ing làm từ đồng vị (apposition)  Ví dụ:  His dream, buying a resort in Vung Tau, never comes true.  4.       Động từ thêm –ing làm túc từ cho giới từ (preposition)  Ví dụ:  Jack is interested in playing football.  5.       Động từ thêm –ing làm túc từ cho động từ.  Ví dụ: She dislikes writing letters.  6.       Một số động từ theo sau là danh động từ làm túc từ: <table style='width: 100%'></table> To admit|  To continue|To give up|To quit To acknowledge|To discuss|To imagine|To recall To appropriate|To like|To justify|To recommend To avoid|To dislike|To keep|To resent Can't stand|To endure|To mind|To resist Can't help|To enjoy|To miss|To rist To consider|To escape|To postpone|To suggest To delay|feel like|To practise|To support To deny|To finish|To prevent|To hate To detest|To forgive|To propose|To tolerate     1.       Các tính từ sở hữu (my, his, her, our, their, your…) có thể được dùng trước danh động từ. Trong văn nói các đại từ túc từ (me, him, her, them…) có thể được dùng trước danh động từ.  Ví dụ:  I dislike your ordering me to do things. (Văn viết)  I dislike you ordering me to do things (Văn nói)  Hoặc  He suggested our going to the movie with him.  He suggested us going to the movie with him.  A.      Động từ có To (To infinitive)      Là động từ nguyên mẫu có To đứng trước, còn được gọi là full infinitive để phân biệt với bare infinitive là động từ nguyên mẫu không có To đứng trước.  1.       Một số động từ theo sau là động từ nguyên mẫu với các cấu trúc sau:  a.       Main verb + to – infinitive (Động từ chính + động từ có To)  Ví dụ:   He wanted to buy a new car.  She asked to see the manager.  b.      Main verb + Object + to – infinitive (Động từ chính +túc từ + động từ có To)  Ví dụ:  He wanted me to buy a new car.  She asked Jack to see the manager.  2.       Động từ nguyên mẫu có thể theo sau các tính từ diễn tả tình cảm:  Ví dụ:  Tom is eager to please everybody.  I am glad to help you.  3.       Động từ nguyên mẫu có thể theo sau danh từ để phụ nghĩa cho danh từ đó:  Ví dụ:  Water to drink is scare in the desert.      He made a decision to wait.  B.      Một số động từ có thể được theo sau là danh động từ hay động từ nguyên mẫu và không khác nhau về nghĩa:  To begin, to hate, to prefer, to continue, to intend, to start, to attempt, to propose, can’t bear.   ·         Tuy nhiên, phải dùng to –infinitive sau start/begin khi:  a.       Động từ start/begin đã được dùng ở dạng tiếp diễn.  Ví dụ: When I got off the train it was beginning/starting to rain.  b.      Theo sau động từ start/begin là động từ understand và realize.  Ví dụ: She began to understand what he really wanted.  C.      Sau các động từ allow, advise, forbid, permit và recommend, động từ thêm –ing được dùng khi không có túc từ.  Ví dụ:  Sorry, we don’t allow smoking in this room.  We don’t allow people to smoke in this room.  I wouldn’t advise taking the car.  I wouldn’t advise you to take the car.  D.      Sự khác nhau về ý nghĩa giữa cách dùng V-ing và To – infinitive sau một số động từ.      1.       - Stop to do sth: dừng lại để làm gì.  Ví dụ: He stopped to smoke. (Anh ta đang đi thì dừng lại để hút thuốc)  Và stop doing sth: dừng việc gì đó.  Ví dụ: He stopped smoking. (Anh ta bỏ thuốc).  2.       Remember to do sth: Nhớ để làm gì (chưa xảy ra).  Ví dụ: Remember to lock the do before you go to the supermarket.  Và Remember doing sth: Nhớ đã làm gì (Xảy ra rồi).  Ví dụ: I remember paying you the money last month. (Tôi nhớ là đã trả tiền anh tháng trước rồi mà, sao giờ anh còn đòi…)  3.       Regret to do sth: tiếc phải làm gì.  Ví dụ: I regret to tell you that your application has been turned down.  Và regret doing sth: Tiếc đã làm gì.  Ví dụ: I regretted lending him money.   4.       Forget to do sth: quên làm gì  Ví dụ: Sorry, I forget to buy the sugar.  Và forget doing sth: Quên đã làm gì.  Ví dụ: I will never forget seeing the Queen.  5.       Try to do sth: Cố gắng làm gì      Ví dụ: He tried to learn well for the exam.  Và try doing sth: thử làm gì  Ví dụ: Try putting some more vinegar. That might make it taste better.  6.       Need to do sth: Cần phải làm gì.  Ví dụ: You need to work harder if you want to succeed.   Need doing sth: Cần phải được làm gì (bị động).  Ví dụ: My jacket needs cleaning.  7.       like to do sth: muốn làm gì.  Ví dụ:I like to get up early so that I can do morning exercise.   Like doing sth: muốn làm gì.  Ví dụ: I like walking in the rain.  III.
