HOW TO UNDERSTAND MAN’S HEART
Man’s heart is more dangerous than mounts and rivers and more difficult to be understood than the sky. A year has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter and a day consist of morning, night, we understand the sky in consequence of them.
As for man, though inwardly overweening, some appeal outwardly careful and generous; though inwardly bewildered and inrascible, some appear outwardly steady and unconcerned. Inward nature and outward appearance are so different to know well.
So, sages employ men by keeping them at a far distance to test their faithfulness, keeping them at a near distance to test their respect, ordering them to do a lot of work to try their abilities, asking them when they are in a hurry to test their minds, making a brief appointment with them to test their reliabilities, entrusting them with dangerous task to test their firm belief, allowing them to drink drunkenly to examine on their attitude. Only by those ways, can we understand man’s heart.
