Nhắc đến Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu người ta liên tưởng ngay đến các thế mạnh của tỉnh gắn liền với biển là công nghiệp khai thác dầu mỏ, vận tải hàng hải, dịch vụ du lịch và khai thác hải sản. Với trữ lượng 900 - 1.200 triệu mét khối dầu mỏ và 360 tỷ mét khối khí đối, BR-VT đang đứng đầu quốc gia về lĩnh vực này. Sự phát triển của ngành công nghiệp khai thác dầu mỏ đã thúc đẩy nền kinh tế BR-VT tăng trưởng đáng kể. GDP đầu người năm 2004 kể cả dầu khí tăng gấp 5,33 lần, không kể dầu khí tăng gấp 10 lần so với năm 1992 (khi mới thành lập tỉnh).
