Năm 1916, Bỉ và Đức tranh giành Burunđi. Sau khi đánh bại Đức, năm 1923, Bỉ đặt Burunđi thành đất uỷ trị. Sau chiến tranh Thế giới thứ hai, Liên hợp quốc vẫn giao cho Bỉ quản lý nước này. Ngày 27-6-1962, Liên hợp quốc thông qua nghị quyết chấm dứt sự bảo trợ của Bỉ và ngày 1-7-1962, Burunđi trở thành một quốc gia độc lập theo chế độ quân chủ lập hiến.
