Vũng lõi của sao Mộc là lớp Hiđrô có tính chất như kim loài dày đặc, lớp bên trên là lớp khinh khí trong suốt gồm Hiđrô lỏng và có thể biến dần sang một lớp ở thể khí. Người ta cho rằng, cơn bão này xuất hiện ít nhất là từ năm 1831, và cũng có thể là từ năm 1665. Sao Mộc có ít nhất 63 vệ tinh, trong đó có 4 vệ tinh lớn nhất gọi là các vệ tinh Galilean: Io, Europa, Ganymede và Callisto, được nhà bác học Galileo Galilei phát hiện vào năm 1610. Sau đó 6 năm, người ta tiếp tục phóng các phi thuyền Voyager khám phá vệ tinh Galilean, và vòng đai bao quanh Mộc Tinh. Tàu Galileo mang lại rất nhiều thông tin quan trọng đối với công cuộc chinh phục sao Mộc khi đã quan sát sự kiện sao chổi Shoemaker-Levy 9 va chạm với Sao Mộc vào tháng 7/1994, phóng thiết bị thăm dò khí quyển vào tháng 7/1995, và quan trong nhất là bắt đầu chuyển động xung quanh hành tinh này vào tháng 12/ 1995, đã trở thành vệ tinh nhân tạo đầu tiên của sao Mộc. Đến năm 2003, sau hơn 14 năm hoạt động trong vũ trụ, các nhà khoa học quyết định phá hủy hoàn toàn tàu Galileo trong bầu khí quyển sao Mộc nhằm tránh việc các vi khuẩn từ trái đất có thể làm ảnh hưởng đến hành tinh này.
