Chứng kiến cảnh ngôi mộ rất đơn sơ, trống vắng. Ông rất bức xúc và đã viết bài thơ này. Ít lâu sau, ông quay lại thì thấy ngôi mộ đã được xây dựng khang trang, có người trông coi. Ông rất phấn khởi. Cụ già - người trông coi khu mộ thấy vị khách vui vẻ, phấn chấn, thân thiện và có vẻ rất quan tâm đến khu mộ mới xây, bèn giãi bày với khách: “Bác biết không, khu mộ được xây dựng khang trang thế này là nhờ ông Vương Trọng - ông đã làm bài thơ “Bên mộ cụ nguyễn Du”. Sau khi đọc bài thơ đó, người ta mới cho xây dựng khu mộ của cụ được như thế này. Đến nước này, vị khách đành phải xưng danh: “Thưa cụ, cháu chính là Vương Trọng đây.
